Counselling Glasgow

I counsel both men and women and I am experienced in treating a wide variety of conditions. These include:

anger management, anxiety, bereavement, childhood trauma, stress, depression, grief, life changes, loss, low self-esteem, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic attacks, phobias, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), sexual abuse, sexual identity, relationships and related issues, weight problems and work-related stress.

Counselling is something that most of us could benefit from at certain stages in our lives: for some, there may have been specific events that have led to grief, trauma or chronic anxiety but others come to counselling with a sense that their lives are out of kilter – they can’t identify where the problem lies let alone how to solve it. Counselling Glasgow gives you the opportunity to explore personal difficulties – past and present – within a professional relationship of confidentiality, acceptance and trust.

Taking the first steps towards finding a counsellor in Glasgow can feel like a daunting prospect with the range and number of counselling services Glasgow has to offer, but let me offer some practical advice:

  • A city like Glasgow has many counsellors and therapists (mostly with an impressive array of letters after their names!) who collectively offer a variety of approaches and therapies. A quick search on the internet will return many results but here I would urge caution: there are therapists whose websites are easy to find on the internet because of clever ranking techniques but they may have had little training and even less experience. In dealing with personal issues, it is essential that you choose your practitioner carefully. The United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is the governing body that holds the national register of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors, listing those practitioner members who meet their exacting standards and training requirements. Your counsellor should hold this qualification or equivalent to ensure that you receive a service of the highest standard and that the practitioner is accountable to a higher body.
  • I am a member of the UKCP and abide by their code of conduct and ethics.
  • When you do find an experienced and fully qualified counsellor in Glasgow there is every chance that they may have studied and be able to practise only one style or theoretical perspective of counselling. They may refer to themselves as a “person-centred therapist” or “cognitive behavioural therapist”, for example. This is, in essence, setting limitations on your potential for a successful counselling experience as individuals can respond to some approaches better than others and indeed, some issues are better dealt with using a variety of techniques.
  • I have trained in most of the main styles of counselling and psychotherapy and I can offer a variety of approaches and techniques, appropriate to the needs of the client and the issue(s) to be addressed.

A comfortable relationship between counsellor and client is also an essential factor in successful counselling. To explore issues and relationships in any real depth, it is essential that you feel safe and comfortable in the knowledge that you are working with a properly qualified, experienced counsellor.
